How to fade dark spots/Hyperpigmentation

One of the most common skincare concerns in People Of Color (POC) is Hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin production and a number of factors can trigger that. If you have been struggling with dark/brown spots and patches on your skin from acne, sun exposure etc, keep reading.

  1. Try to figure out what’s causing your hyperpigmentation or making it worse and address it.Don’t know what may be causing yours? Here are some of the major triggers of hyperpigmentation:

  • Acne
  • Sun damage/Sun exposure
  • Inflammation (from acne, eczema or any injury to the skin)
  • Trauma or picking at skin (makes your hyperpigmentation darker and worse than it should)
  • Hormones- eg melasma/mask of pregnancy

      2. Once you have figured out what’s triggering or making your hyperpigmentation worse, then you can work on limiting those triggers, keeping them under control and then you can introduce treatments and/or products that can help tackle the hyperpigmentation.

Some of the most effective, cosmetic ingredients/products for hyperpigmentation:

Alpha arbutin

Kojic acid

AHAs/BHAs

Azelaic acid
Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine
Retinoids

Niacinamide

Tranexamic acid

LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST, adequate use of SUNSCREEN. You have to be religious with your sunscreen usage to see real results. Without sunscreen and without limiting unnecessary sun exposure, there will be little to no Progress.

Do note that, if you choose to treat your hyperpigmentation with products only, a good combination of these above ingredients with adequate use of SUNSCREEN will help speed up the process within 3-12 months on an average, depending on the depth of your hyperpigmentation, how widespread it is, how consistent and religious you are with your routine and how good your skincare habits are. You can purchase sunscreens here.

What products are out there with a combination of these ingredients? You’ll find 4 of these effective ingredients in our Antispot Face cream, 3 of these ingredients in our Skin repair face moisturizer and Lucent body lotion which is amazing for body acne and body hyperpigmentation. Our antispot face cream is the most sought after product for facial hyperpigmentation in our range, and when combined with our skin repair moisturizer, Chef’s kiss.

However, for certain forms of hyperpigmentation, It may take a comprehensive regimen of products, treatments & lifestyle changes to have that skincare transformation you’ve been looking for.

In that case, you should consider doing treatments like Chemical peels, Microneedling while still using these products to speed up the healing process. This is especially if you have used products for a while, are not getting the desired progress you need or you just want faster results. Furthermore, combining treatments and products cuts the treatment duration short and optimizes results.
